Our Hero--- Lim Bo Seng/ Members of Force 136

A hero is someone who understands the degree of responsibility that comes with freedom. They have many goals to achieve, and they never stop no matter what obstacles get in their way. They risk their lives to save another life. Mr Lim Bo Seng is Singapore’s hero as he risked his life to save many of his comrades’ lives during World War II.

A hero is not only someone who achieved what they want to achieve, they are the ones who sacrificed themselves to protect the country. Lim Bo Seng went through tortures and despite of the great pains that he faced physically and mentally, he still upholds his own values. It was stated that "Even when his life was hanging by a thread, Bo Seng still showed so much concern for his comrades. I was deeply touched by his noble character and kept pleading with him to eat. Bo Seng’s selflessness moved the warders, too." His characteristics really made him stand out as a hero.

The challenge Lim Bo Seng faced was being tortured and forced to reveal names of leaders and hideouts of Force 136. He managed to remain firm and not surrender to the Japanese. He was able to overcome the challenge as he was brave and able to bear the pain, keeping those secrets to himself. He was also selfless as he always put others before himself and protested against the ill treatment of his comrades in the prison and the prisoners-of-war although he was also one of them. He refused to cooperate with the Japanese, did not take any food provided by them, though he was already in weak health. He persevered to the end. He exchanged his life for the sake of others, and remained loyal to Singapore. His death make the Japanese softened their stance a little.

  2. Group one has stated clearly and briefly about the heroic acts of our war hero, Lim Bo Seng. Their brief information gives us an idea of what exactly happened during world war 2 and how he had actually sacrificed himself to save the secrets of his country. This just shows how loyal he was, a rare find. Sometimes, people would rather save their own live rather than sacrificing, but this is not applicable to Lim Bo Seng. However, i feel that group one can emphasize more on how focused he was in carrying out his duty. For example, he did leave his eight children and his dear wife behind in order to carry out the mission for singapore. His bravery and determination really deserve all our respects and remembrance. A true war hero

  3. I agree with Group 1's point of view. A hero is someone who is ready to lose their lives for their country, not caring about their own life anymore. They have used a good example, which is Lim Bo Seng.

Lim Bo Seng, despite being captured by the Japanese and being threatened by them, he did not reveal anything about Force 136 and their investigations on the Japanese. This shows that he is loyal to Force 136 by not revealing their investigations to the Japanese. He was willing to lose his life for Force 136 than to risk the rest of Force 136 members' lives' be lost. To me, he's more than a hero.
