Group 2 : lieutenant adnan bin saidi of the malay regiment
What makes a hero?
A hero is someone who is willing to make sacrifices for the sake and well being of others. When in difficult situations, a hero will have the determination and the firmness to resolve all the obstacles that they have. They will have a sense of full responsibility to whatever they are assigned to do. They will whole-heartedly dedicate themselves to their responsibility and would rather sacrifice themselves then betray others. They are focused in whatever they do and would not let anything distract them. They will persevere all the way till they finish their job. Courage is the spirit of their soul when they meet danger without fear. Committing themselves in daring and life-risking acts for the sake of others are the kind of selfless acts that a hero should have.
Adnan bin Saidi was a 27-year-old infantry officer, who lost his life while fighting fearlessly during the battle for pasir panjang between 13 and 14 February, 1942. Despite being heavily outnumbered by the Japanese troops, lieutenant adnan bin saidi and his 42-man troop fought on. Adnan bin saidi upheld his determination and fought till the very end for the sake of protecting the Pasir Panjang Ridge. He did not retreat and surrender despite knowing that his troops will definitely lose out. His acts of bravery and courage made him stand out as a hero.
Adnan bin saidi was heavily wounded but still refused to retreat and instead emboldened his men to fight on. “Adnan would have never surrendered under any circumstances. He was absolutely dedicated. In fact, just before fighting, he adopted a motto for his platoon, ‘Biar putih tulang, jangan putih mata’ - death before dishonour." This shows that his honour for his country was so deep. After they lost the battle, he still refused to give in to the Japanese and that angered them. In the end, he was cruelly bayoneted by them.

ReplyDeleteI do agree with group 2 as it takes a lot of values to become a hero. Not anyone can easily be a hero. Hero means a man of distinguished courage or ability as mentioned by group 2. He/She is also admired by people for their brave deeds and noble qualities. Although lieutenant adnan bin saidi knew that he would defeated easily, but he did not give up the chance to try. Instead, he did everything he was capable of to protect Singapore making it not go into the hands of the Japanese.
ReplyDeleteGroup 2's post was quite detailed and elaborative in explaining what a hero is. I clearly understood what was the message that they wanted to convey to us. However, I think they explained too much on the real definition of hero. I think the way they presented their information is quite organized. They could have provided us with some examples of the heroic acts of adnan bin saidi when they are explaining about a hero. In this way, we will be able to apply the qualities of a hero with adnan bin saidi and be able to have a clearer understanding of it.
